Biography

John Lafleur, MD is board certified in Emergency Medicine and is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Lafleur is also the Director of the Department of Emergency Medicine’s fellowship in wilderness medicine.

Along with other members of the Maritime Medicine healthcare provider team, Dr. Lafleur has a strong interest in maritime medicine in addition to close ties with the Department’s Innovative Practice & Telemedicine Section. He applies his wilderness medicine experience to his practice of maritime medicine as there are many areas of overlap due to the generally austere medical environment of ships at sea.

Dr. Lafleur instructs residents and interns in the department’s clinical environments, and medical students through the school’s medical student apprenticeship (CAP) program. He is also an instructor for first and second year medical students in their foundational course in clinical reasoning (POM). In addition, he holds a PhD in biomedical engineering and has strong research interests through which he involves many members of the providers and staff in the department.
