Biography

Dr. Sidawy is Professor and Lewis B. Saltz Chair of the Department of Surgery at the George Washington University in Washington, DC. He is a Vascular Surgeon; he completed his Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Boston University Hospital. He also obtained an M.P.H. degree in Health Care Administration from George Washington University.

He has published about 200 peer-reviewed articles, 60 chapters, and made several national presentations and visiting professorships. In addition, Dr. Sidawy concluded a 7.5 year term as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Vascular Surgery, the premier journal of the specialty. During his term as editor, Dr. Sidawy launched two new journals; the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders in 2013 and the Journal of Vascular Surgery-Cases in 2015. He edited three textbooks; the Basic Science of Vascular Disease in 1997; Diabetic Foot, Lower Extremity Arterial Disease, and Limb Salvage published in 2006; and the 9th, 10th, and 11th editions of Rutherford’s Vascular Surgery and Endovascular therapy released in 2018, 2022, and 2026 respectively, a two-volume text often called the “bible” of the specialty.

He served on the Board of Governors and just concluded 9-year term on the Board of Regents of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and was elected its chair in 2021-2022. He currently serves as 106th President of the ACS. He has also served on several groups and committees of the Board to include Chair of the Executive Committee, the Finance Committee, the Executive Compensation Committee, the Honors Committee, and the inaugural Education Advisory Committee. He also serves on the Steering Committee of the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators.

His previous leadership positions included: a 10-year tenure as the Director of the Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program at the Georgetown University and the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC; a member of the Vascular Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery and President of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) the largest national professional organization in the specialty, the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, the Eastern Vascular Society, the Chesapeake Vascular Society, the Metropolitan Washington Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, the Washington Academy of Surgery, and the Vascular Disease Foundation.

As an ACS Regent and SVS Past-President, Dr. Sidawy worked with both organizations to collaborate on the Vascular Verification Quality Program, which was launched in 2023 in its inpatients and outpatient formats. He received an SVS Presidential citation for initiating, developing, and guiding these two verification programs to operational status and chaired their steering committee for six-year term.

He is the recipient of several awards and honors, including, The LaSalle D. Lefall award for “Outstanding contributions to the profession of surgery and to the entire metropolitan Washington community” from the Metropolitan Washington Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. In addition, the Chapter has named a lectureship after Dr. Sidawy for his over 20 years of service to the Chapter. Also, the 2009 New York Vascular Surgery Fellows Competition Award was named after Dr. Sidawy; this is a clinical and basic scientific competition of all vascular fellows and residents in training programs in the eastern region of the United States. Dr. Sidawy received the 2025 SVS Lifetime Achievement Award.
