Samuel Chijioke Onyewu, MBChB, is an anesthestiologist in the Department of Anesthesiology at The GW Medical Faculty Associates, providing general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, and acute pain services.
Dr. Onyewu graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Osun State Nigeria, with a Bachelor in Medicine, Bachelor in Surgery (MBCHB) in 2009. He completed his internship at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital and subsequently a mandatory youth service at Otunba Tunwase National Pediatric Center Ijebu-Ode. After migrating to the United States, Dr. Onyewu worked at the Outcomes Research Center at Howard University Hospital. His research interests include outcomes research in health disparities with a focus on cancer research. This translated to a residency in preliminary general surgery, scholarly activities, and presentations at prestigious conferences.
Dr. Onyewu had a lifelong interest in pain management and thus transitioned to anesthesiology. He completed his residency at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, and a fellowship in Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital, New Haven, Connecticut. Dr. Onyewu’s interest is in perioperative pain management. Leveraging on his training in regional anesthesiology and acute pain management, he utilizes particulate and non-particulate steroids to prolong the duration of single-shot nerve blocks and fosters expansive use of ultrasounds for truncal and abdominal field blocks, while seeking ways to tackle opioid use disorder, by providing opioid free anesthesia. His extensive experience in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) affords him the skill set to provide his patients with evidence-based medicine.
