Dr. Ranniger is an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, and the Director of Simulation for the School of Medicine and Health Science’s Clinical Learning and Skills Simulation (CLASS) Center. She received SB and SM degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1989 and 1991, and MD/PhD degrees from the University of Maryland in 1999. She completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at George Washington University Hospital in 2003 and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Ranniger has been a member of the faculty since 2003. During that time she has been the Chair of GW Hospital’s Peer Review Committee, and is currently a Vice Chair of the Institutional Review Board for GWU. Dr. Ranniger is involved in curriculum development for the Medical School, and holds positions on the Committee for Undergraduate Medical Education Curriculum (CUMEC), the Curriculum Management Group, the Information Technology Group, and the Year 3-4 Committee.
Dr. Ranniger’s current focus is on the development of a new facility for the CLASS Center, slated to be opened in 2014. The new center will include 14 outpatient examination rooms, 2 general inpatient rooms, 2 trauma/ED/ICU rooms, 2 operating rooms, a procedural skills lab, and debriefing rooms. The facility will include extensive video recording and playback capabilities to facilitate hands on learning and educational feedback. Dr. Ranniger’s research interests are in the use of simulation to enhance medical education and improve patient outcomes.
