Biography

John Lucas, MD, was born and raised in southwest Virginia in Roanoke County.  He attended Duke University for his undergraduate studies, where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Neuroscience.  He successfully defended an undergraduate research thesis that earned him an Honors distinction with his degree. Dr. Lucas returned to Virginia to attend medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond where he developed his strong interest in surgery.  He then completed a five-year General Surgery residency at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and was naturally drawn to critical care and trauma surgery.

Dr. Lucas spent the first year of his fellowship completing the Critical Care portion of his training in GW’s unique, multidisciplinary ICU encompassing surgical, medical, traumatic, and neurological critically ill patients.
