Jeffrey Akman, MD currently serves as the Interim Chair of the GW Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and as the Chief of the Psychiatry Service of the GWU Hospital. He is a nationally recognized psychiatrist and academic physician executive. Dr. Akman is a graduate of Duke University and The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He completed his residency in psychiatry at The George Washington University Medical Center and joined the psychiatry faculty in 1985. Prior to his appointment as Dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, he served as the Leon M. Yochelson professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry (2000-2010). Dr. Akman has a long history of community service and has served on numerous nonprofit boards of directors including Whitman-Walker Clinic and Food & Friends.
Dr. Akman has been honored by numerous professional societies and by his peers on multiple occasions as a leading psychiatrist and educator. While he specializes in LGBTQ psychiatry, Dr. Akman is a skilled diagnostician and practices the full-range of general adult psychiatry, providing insight-oriented and psychodynamic psychotherapy and, when appropriate, medication treatment.
