ANNOUNCEMENT (Nov. 9, 2022) — The GW Medical Faculty Associates is pleased to announce the appointment of Barry Browning to serve as the executive director for surgical services. In this role, Browning is responsible for recruiting and managing highly qualified managers across multiple locations and functions within the areas of orthopaedics, surgery, urology, and neurosurgery. He is also responsible for providing administrative oversight and support for each division, department, or combination of service lines and establishing goals and measurable key performance indicators.

He brings over 20 years of experience in the health care field – and is familiar with the complexities of an academic medical enterprise. I know that Barry, along with the other executive directors, will be central to the growth and enhancement of our dynamic health care institution,” said Pamela McClain, COO of the GW MFA.
Additionally, in this role, Browning will improve operational effectiveness and drive positive financial performance within the surgical services through improved patient access and promotion of value-based initiatives.

Prior to joining the GW MFA, Browning served as a senior administrator at the University of Kansas Health System and School of Medicine, where he oversaw the Family Medicine and Psychiatry/Behavioral Health service lines. During his 20 years in health care, he has held positions with increasing roles in academic medicine, community health care and for-profit health care.
Browning served in the United States Army for 30 years, retiring at the rank of Colonel. His last position was serving as the Deputy Director of Medical Plans and Operations for Iraq. His team was responsible for the delivery of health care to all United States Uniformed and Non-Uniformed Personnel. His team also led the health care system for the U.S. Department of State as the military withdrew in 2011. He has been awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, and Meritorious Service Medal with 4 Oak Leaves.
Browning holds a BA in public administration from the University of Oklahoma, and a master’s degree from LaSalle University in health services management. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, the Medical Group Management Association, the American Association of Orthopedic Executives, and The Order of Military Medical Merit.
He is married and has three daughters, three dogs, and a cat. He is an avid college football fan, wearing Sooner’s Red on the weekends and has season tickets to his alma mater.
Browning began serving in this position on Oct. 17, 2022.
